Anyone can make a character. The interesting question is how to make one that people chat with more than once. After thousands of community characters, the pattern is clear: the cards that work nail four things — persona, greeting, example dialogue and tags — and skip everything else.
Persona: one clear idea, not ten
The description defines who the character is. The strongest cards commit to one clear identity with a couple of contradictions for texture — a demon who knits, a rival who secretly worries about you. Ten competing traits dilute the voice; the model averages them into mush.
Greeting: open a scene, don't introduce a resume
The greeting is the first message the character sends, and it does more than any other field to set quality. Write it as a moment: in medias res, with a decision on the table. Give the user something to react to, not a list of facts about the character.
Example dialogue: teach voice, not facts
- Two or three exchanges are enough — rhythm and vocabulary, not encyclopedic detail.
- Show how the character handles being teased, challenged, and comforted.
- Keep formatting consistent with how you want replies to look.
Tags: how people will find your character
